Scripting? |
What is all this scripting hodge-podge?!
You've probably heard about scripting, and some of you probably don't know what the heck it is. Let me do a quick little
history and comparison. Quake had something similar to Tribes, with QuakeC. QuakeC was an interpreted language, like
Tribes. This means, that the program is not compiled, it is interpreted by the program that uses the script, this makes
it much easier to edit. Another example, you are looking at. HTML is an interpreted
language. Quake2 used DLLs, Dynamic-Link libraries to do it's modifications. This made for more powerful code, but, it
was more difficult to edit, it was also potentially dangerous because a mod author could do pretty much whatever he wanted
with that DLL. Quake3 is supposed to use an interpreted language, similar to QuakeC when it is released.
Notice:
It has come to my attention that not all of the visitors here have come for the scripting. A Clanmate, [Ff]V0lk pointed out
that while there were more then 10,000 hits to my Angelfire page, he claims most of them came from people looking for monkey pr0n. Just in case
he wasn't mocking me, I have included a link for all of you that came looking for monkey pr0n here.
To do server side mods, you will need a volume extractor...I would suggest WinVol, by Mike Ochs. It's 520kb and can be found
here.

Duck Hunt! 10:48am - KillerBunny
Well my clan got our tails kicked by Western Alliance a few days ago, and after looking at the demo again...and you could only tell if you
played it back at .25 the speed, that I really was making bad snipes, and it wasn't the PL (may have been a combo of the two) So I said,
well enough of this, so I whipped this modmap (woohoo I coined a term) up to work on sniping, primarly target aquisition speed. After playing
for a while, by myself and with some clanmates...our sniping improved 50% in one case. It's wonderful. So here is Duck_Rollercoster. Put it
in /tribes/base/missions/ and run a server with Duck_Rollercoster as the map, go on the Diamond Sword side, grab a rifle and head to the switch.
Please send in suggestions for more features, I'd like to develop this further, so this is just kind of a Alpha release if you want to think
of it that way.

Tribescon99 Etc. 7:03pm - KillerBunny
Damn! What a time at Tribescon! I'm going to do a full writeup for PSS soon, but as of right now, the scripting section is going to
be offline for a bit, because...well, it needs it heh. I met Presto and that guy is awesome, he works on the coolest project. The
plan for the scripting section right now is very unclear, I'm not really sure where I'm going to go with it...but for one thing,
I'm going to have to start using the Presto Pack.
